For 125 years, Boomsma Beerenburger has been made using the original distilling method. The process starts with a careful selection of the best herbs, including: Gentian, Juniper berry, Liquorice, and Laurel berry. These fragrant herbs are blended and then steeped in alcohol, under the distiller’s supervision, for at least two months. The result is a distinctive and pure Beerenburger with a full taste and powerful aroma. Beerenburger is a Dutch drink, made by adding herbs to jenever (gin). The original Beerenburger was made in the mid-19th century with a secret mixture of spices from the Amsterdam spice merchant Hendrik Beerenburg. Technical notes ABV: 30 % Alcohol: 60 proof Botanicals/aromatics used: Gentian root, juniper berry, corriander seed, laurel berries, licorice root and blessed thistle Source of base ingredients: Herbs
Other text Fermentation: For our Beerenburger we use 100% natural herbs. Eleven different herbs are blended to create this unique drink. The following 6 herbs are in our recipe: Gentian root, Juniper berry, Corriander seed, Laurel berry, Licorice root, and Blessed thistle; the other 5 are a well kept family secret! Distillation: Crop selection of the different herbs is essential for the quality of a good Beerenburg as they deliver the distinctive character of the spirit. After harvesting, the herbs are macerated together in alcohol until the alcohol has absorbed the herbs’ essences, creating a perfect harmony for this classic drink. Bottling: A selected blend of herbs and caramel will be added to the mixture of water and alcohol until it reaches 30% alcohol per volume. Filtering of the product through 1 micron filter. Rinsing, bottling, and capping of the product in new stoneware crocks, under hygienic conditions, using high speed automatic bottling.
Food pairing Boomsma Beerenburger should be enjoyed neat, chilled, or on the rocks. Additionally, it is a perfect ingredient for cocktails.
Producer The first bottle of Boomsma ’Oud Friesche’ Beerenburger was produced around 125 years ago. This distinctive bitters became widely popular in no time. Today Boomsma offers an extensive range of drinks. Many of these are distilled and bottled in house. At the beginning of the Nineteen Seventies Boomsma started to import a selection of quality wines from around the world. Conversely, many litres of the Boomsma range have been distilled for export. The demand in other countries for whisky, vodka and rum has been increasing for years and typical Dutch genever and bitters are becoming more and more popular abroad. In contrast to most other distilleries, Boomsma Distilleerderij is still an independent family owned business. The fifth generation is now in charge, thereby ensuring that old traditions are cherished and new ambitions fulfilled. Anyone who wants to find out more is welcome to visit the Boomsma Museum. This charming museum in the city centre of Leeuwarden also houses an inviting tasting room.
