Wine maker notes Bosche Vineyard-Rutherford (100%): A small 22-acre vineyard located west of Hwy. 29, on the famed Rutherford Bench, the Bosche Vineyard is composed of very deep, gravelly loam soil. Early on in the growing season the water table is high (about 5 feet below the surface) and provides the water and nutrients for new shoot growth. As the growing season progresses, the water table drops below the root zone, causing a natural stress cycle for the vine to change its course of growth and focus resources into ripening the fruit, intensifying the dark, concentrated flavors.
Producer A Napa Valley original, the origin of Freemark Abbey dates back to 1881, when Josephine and John Tychson purchased 147 acres in the Napa Valley. Eight decades later, Freemark Abbey helped launch the modern era of California wine. Ted Edwards has been Freemark Abbey’s winemaker since 1985. Edwards’ intelligent approach to winemaking, combined with the sheer length of his experience in the Napa Valley-the Rutherford Bench in particular-make him one of the region’s leading vintners.
