Hahn Slh Chardonnay 750ml
$55.99 price per bottle

Review |
These are the high-end bottlings from this large producer, and they’re made in limited quantities. While they won’t be the easiest wines to track down, they’re more than worth looking for. Hahn’s late owner, Nicky Hahn, was instrumental in establishing the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation in 1988, followed by its official recognition as an AVA in 1991. Each of the wines in this lineup represents a selection the top barrels its variety from a given vintage, as selected by long-time winemaker Paul Clifton. In the context of the appellation and the wines’ quality, they deliver truly outstanding value. - From New Releases from Santa Lucia Highlands & Neighbors (Oct 2018) by Josh Raynolds |
Wine maker notes |
It was our founder Nicky Hahn who suggested that the Santa Lucia Highlands be deemed a unique winegrowing district. In 1991, three years after he and fellow vintners made their appeal, the federal government approved the Highlands as an official American Viticultural Area (AVA). Today, we produce our Hahn SLH Pinot Noir and Chardonnay entirely from our estate, in this breathtakingly beautiful region of Monterey County. The fruit grows in our family-owned vineyards and the wine is barrel-aged in the winery’s cellar. When it’s time to blend the wine and get it in the bottle, our winemaker Paul Clifton chooses the barrels that he feels epitomize the aromas, flavors and structure of Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highland. We deem only a very limited number of barrels worthy to carry the SLH label. |

During the 1790s, Spanish missionaries recognized the rare soils and favorable climate of the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey and planted grapevines there. Yet nearly two hundred years later when our founder Nicolaus (Nicky) Hahn and his wife Gaby first purchased land in the Highlands, cattle, sheep and horses ranged over the hills. Vineyards were a secondary concern. Nicky immediately saw that the land he’d purchased was destined for greater things than grazing stock. He wasted no time. In 1980, the Hahns released their first wine from SLH. A mere eight years later, Nicky led the charge to establish SLH as an American Viticultural Area, a dream he saw realized in 1991. Today, Hahn Family Wines, now run by Nicky and Gaby’s son Philip, owns and sustainably farms 650 acres of estate vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands. SLH enjoys worldwide acclaim for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made there. |
