$693.00 price per bottle

From the Napa Valley region in California, this special wine from Grgich Hills Estate celebrates the 100th birthday of founder Miljenko 'Mike' Grgich. A Croatian immigrant, Mike Grgich became internationally famous as the winemaker behind the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that won the white wine category at the historic 'Judgment of Paris' tasting in 1976. He established Grgich Hills in 1977 with a philosophy of making age-worthy, terroir driven wines from their own estate vineyards and farming with great respect for the earth. The winery farms all of its vineyards organically and uses regenerative agriculture practices. Wine Description The 2019 'Yountville Old Vine' Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich and elegant wine made from grapes planted in 1959. The old vines produce fewer grapes, but the fruit has more concentrated, intense flavours. The wine is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. It has complex aromas of brambly blackberry, rosehip, red currant, and blood orange. The palate follows with flavours of sweet cherry, blueberry, rosemary, and dry peat. The tannins are soft, round, and velvety, leading to a long, luscious finish. This full bodied wine has a heritage feel, like a great Cabernet from the 1980s, and is expected to age well. The optimal drinking window is through at least 2033. All of Grgich Hills' vineyards are certified organic, and the grapes are grown without artificial pesticides or herbicides. Accolades Wine Enthusiast - 94 points Natalie MacLean - 94 points Wine Advocate - 93 points Decanter - 98 points Food Pairing The wine's rich and elegant profile pairs well with a variety of dishes. Suggested pairings include lamb Bolognese, beef enchiladas, barbecued ribs in sauce, hamburgers, or hard cheese. A perfect match to enhance the wine's complexity. Vintage Quality The 2019 vintage in Napa Valley was an exceptional and uneventful growing season with plenty of rain in the winter and minimal extreme heat events. This allowed for a long hangtime, giving winemakers the luxury of picking grapes at optimal ripeness. The resulting wines are often described as having a "purity" of fruit that reflects Napa Valley's terroir.
