Alter Ego de Palmer is the second wine of the Château Palmer, a Third Classified Growth from the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, France. The estate is known for its high proportion of Merlot, giving its wines a supple and rich style that is closer to those of Pomerol and St-Émilion than typical Left Bank wines. Since 2004, the property has been managed by Thomas Duroux, who has spearheaded a move towards biodynamic farming, with the estate becoming fully certified biodynamic in 2017. Alter Ego was first produced in 1998, offering a different expression of the same terroir: a more spontaneous, round, and approachable wine with the same elegance and silky tannins as its older sibling. Wine Description The 2019 Alter Ego de Palmer has a deep garnet-purple colour. On the nose, it offers an explosive aromatic profile with notes of red fruits like raspberries and redcurrants, alongside hints of spring flowers. The wine's blend is 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Petit Verdot. The palate is lively and refreshing, with a soft, long, and supple texture. It presents layers of blackcurrant, bilberry, and tobacco notes, with very precise but pliable tannins that are almost "feathery". The wine is medium- to full-bodied, with a beautiful balance of intensity and freshness. It is noted for its purity and aromatic clarity. The optimal drinking window is from 2025 to 2035. Accolades James Suckling - 96 points Decanter - 94 points Vinous - 93 points Food Pairing This wine is a versatile partner for a variety of classic dishes, including veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, and game. It also pairs well with rich fish dishes like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta. This pairing highlights the wine's depth and character. Vintage Quality The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by a hot and dry summer, which was mitigated by cooler evenings that helped grapes retain acidity. Winemakers like Thomas Duroux demonstrated skill in adapting to the challenging conditions. The result was a vintage with concentrated, rich fruit that also maintains a remarkable sense of freshness and elegance.
