The Oban distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland, founded in 1794 by the Stevenson brothers. Located in the port town of Oban, the distillery's whisky style is a unique blend of the smoky, dry character of the Scottish Islands and the lighter, sweeter notes of the Highlands. The distillery is one of the smallest in Scotland, using only two pot stills, which emphasizes a focus on quality, authenticity, and heritage rather than high volume. This limited edition single malt is the Oban 12 Year Old 'Heart of the Harbour,' part of the 2025 Diageo Special Releases. The whisky was matured for at least 12 years in ex-bourbon casks. It is bottled at 54. 7% ABV and has a pale gold colour. The nose reveals a maritime character with notes of sea salt and fresh brine, as well as hints of dried seaweed and a touch of vanilla and honey from the oak. There are also notes of soft orchard fruits like green apple and pear, balanced with a subtle citrus zest. The palate is smooth and delivers malt sweetness with baked apple, toffee, and a subtle wood spice. The finish is long and dry with a hint of pepperiness.
